Actually get links from relevant niche sites/blogs does important, they give your links more weight for the
PR calculation.
Imagine your tech blog having links from travel blogs with other relevant tech blogs, which are more important?
The pagerank is calculated every time by google but we can't see that, the
PR that you see is from the google bar - that is the one updated every 2-3 months.
Google decided to differentiate the update since people are crazy about backlinks and wanted them to focus more on contents than backlinks.
Backlinks are still important though.
