They are slots to expand the capabilities of your computer via add-on cards. Just about every gadget that you can buy which actually performs a function in the computer (except most video cards - they have a special slot all to themselves) will connect via a PCI slot. This includes, but is not limited by, network cards, SCSI cards, TV Tuner cards (although most tuners are now integrated with the video card itself), internal radio cards, and sound cards. Lately a lot of those items are connecting via USB or Firewire, but the majority of the market still connects via PCI.
