Why do you want a free blog?

Consider:
1. If this is going to be a money making or complementary blog to an existing business website, you can build more credibility by having your own domain for the blog or building it as a subdomain of the website. Domain vs. Subdomain

2. If you still choose to use a free blogging platform, and have built the popularity of the blog, what if the blogging platform discontinues (i.e. closes) e.g. GeoCities, a free webspace provider, is being closed by Yahoo! in July, 2009. They have been around for years and now decided to take another direction.

3. What about your blog theme? If you read the Terms and Services of your chosen blogging platform you will most likely find that you can't take the theme (and any other things they provide) with you.

If this is a practice or personal blog, then maybe a free one would be suitable, but you still will run into the issues mentioned above.

P.S.
Been there, done that.
