A little confused why the Adsense police are out in force and why they're quoting a fictional guideline?

It is fine to use Google Adsense and affiliate links on the same page.

Back on topic, it can be a good idea to mix programs up. Some webmasters may argue that you are shooting yourself in the foot when someone goes and clicks on an Adsense ad and the sale is stole from a competitor. Actually, many people that visit your landing page may not be in a position to buy there and then. If they're window shopping then why not try and earn atleast something from them when they leave the page? Further info, related adverts etc.

If it's all about stealing commissions, then if it only takes one line of Adsense text to direct a user over your full page article then maybe you're in the wrong line of work. Also, you can incentivise users going through your affiliate links by offering freebies n stuff.
