depends on content and overall design, for example in the UK it is very common for people to have difficulty with overly complicated websites, websites with a Black background and white or green txt tend to just get users to Skip the site altogether unless they can really be bothered
an example would be, websites with a black background and large amounts of basic white txt as in a good 5 min read, most users will glance then go away, if there attention is not maintained or answer is not resolved within 2 to 3 lines, they will tend to skip it and go google another site
i dont know if its a full blown global phenonom, but in the states and UK users who regularly use the internet, and are more comfortable reading a physical book than online, have developed a type of ADD Since most where for the first 10 years of there life accustomed to reading in certain manors that the internet basically turns upside down, gradually most will get over this, but there is still a huge percentage that havent
it is basically to do with how, as we grow up and develop, our thinking and learning habits become a little flexed to work a certain way automatically
with older people it can worse, for example despite 200 odd attempts, i still cant get my mother to check her email or use google, however she can process large volumes on accountancy and law, and refile 2 dozen filing cabinets without stoping
back in 95, when the web was taking off, there was many websites that took a format like a book just because it was easier on many users
you prob seen it quite often but many current webdesigns take a format that resembles a page or piece of paper with content with txt clean clear and concise ontop of a background which could resemble anything from a tablecloth to a wooden table or wallpaper, and because of this it is easier for anyone to process
