Not all people of this faith believe in the same teachings. As for the teachings of Muhammad, they were quite different to what is taught by Muslim preachers now who are not even close as holy as Sahib Muhammad was.
The same could be said about the teachings of Christ. Those pure teachings always change due to the ones in control of the law making. Some/Most, change the teachings to fit their own agendas.
But the core principles of such holy men are always lost or misinterpreted as a rule. I wouldn't blame it on the ignorance of man, but on the passage of time that insures that even old writings shall decay. Hence, the misinterpretations or holes in the scriptures.
As for Muslims cheering Obama's election. This was possibly because Obama's grandfather was also a Muslim:
