Your crying? That is a lil funny, but you are right. There are a lot of webmasters that feel the only way to beat the SERPs is to build as many un-natural backlinks as possible. The truth is when you are running a marketing campaign rather than only worrying about the outside promotion of your site make sure when someone lands on your site they find it either extremely helpful or satisfying so when you do submit your site to social media such as bookmarking and write articles or press releases people have a reason to place your sites URl on their web presence. Even if you are running a purely commercial website there are ways to make it link bait by either having the most info on the products your selling, largest quantity, best prices, best customer service, or whatever else you can really work on becoming the "best at" then when you market you can give people a reason to share your website with others. I am like you where I have ran myself into the dirt with "marketing" when really I should be focusing on building the best site/service that I can for my traffic making it so they only go through me and are very willing without any prompt or request place my backlinks on their site.
