Balance? Yes there should be balance, but SEO a continues process.

In that same line of thinking, how many people go after high quantity vs. high quality links? Again, loads and loads. These people really love buffets, I imagine. Then there are the people who will only pursue links of PR 6 and above, people who use Alexa (yes, still) and other metrics that the majority of us see as being just a bit too…worthless is the only word I can think of that sums it up. You can see how this type of thinking can easily throw things off balance.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with setting up a goal to achieve. Webmasters and SEO specialists all have different target goals, some uses PR as their basic, Alexa for their traffic goals, Google analytics for their targeted sales, and so on... SEO is based on trial-and-error, if Plan A doesn't work proceed to Plan B. There is no exact formula for the right search engine optimization, so how can you say: "You can see how this type of thinking can easily throw things off balance"? How do you know what's the right balance for SEO? Some of just focuses more on on-page optimization and pay a little attention to off-page and vice versa, some even focuses more on their articles than their quality backlinks, and the most common of all, those who focuses more on getting backlinks regardless of its quality.
