Of course it should be a long term relationship. Customers should not have to jump from provider to provider unless something significant changes. (major change in operations, outgrowing existing hosts abilities, etc)

Worrying if a company can provide a specific level of service for 6 months or a year in advance is going to be a very troubling thing to do. There are so many potental factors that could affect things like this that can be totally out of the control of the owners, managers and even employees with the hosting company. You should pick someone you feel can grow with your needs.
