I think it's a great idea, definitely interesting. Seems like technology like that would be a great tool that could propel web design to another level of useability.
Unfortunately, this looks like something that will remain the domain of very large companies. The average freelancer is going to have a hard time coming up with the resources to conduct studies like this (even if the tech becomes commercially available). If websites designed this way end up being more effective than sites designed without it, large companies might push freelance designers out of business.
I'd be interested to see this applied in other fields, such as art and graphic design. Perhaps there is a "visual configuration" that pulls the viewer into the image, making them look at it for longer periods and scrutinize details.
