While DMOZ is still important, if you have a commercial site, chances of getting in are quite slim in my view. The mantra in the resource-zone is "unique content'. That typically translates into 'informational sites that do not sell products or services".

The general recommendation is submit once to DMOZ, and forget it. Then go to work getting into all of the other major directories (15 - 30 depending on what you can afford). If one day you get DMOZ listed, it will be a pleasant surprise.
