This is just a guess, but it could be that Flash will render the bitmap file to a lower quality then your jpg.
So say the bitmap is 10/10 to start with (in terms of quality)
the jpg could be 7/10
Once the bitmap is rendered by flash it could be down to 5/10
But because the jpg is already compressed flash over looks it and therefore the size is going to be bigger because the quality is better then your bitmap...
I hope all that makes sence. And yer, it was just a guess to why there could be the different file sizes.
