It's often assumed that using the same anchor text in links or same descriptions in directories is bad because it will somehow result in penalties or devaluation by search engines like Google.

I doubt that this is true.

However, I do agree that it isn't good SEO. What you'd end up with using that strategy is perhaps decent ranking for a single search term. But what about other appropriate search terms? Using some of those in your anchor text where possible will spread the benefits around.
