I wouldn't be surprised to see SEO contests become a trend. Actually, I don't even think that the trend is so narrow as to be SEO based. I think it's the widespread "free entry" contests that gives decent prizes away to free entries with minimal work and BIG prizes to the people who offer them!
an example would be
www.winyourwayin.com. It's free poker out in my area. I remember the first game they hosted, the bar had like 90 people show up on a day that normally had 3. I thought man if I could invest... this is going to be huge. they have tons of bars (their customers) and cafes signed up hosting games for thousands of people now.
SEOcontest(s) are another variable on that whole idea. It may not be "new" but I think it's trend is picking up steam.
