Most has been said: directories, forum sigs, articles, SEO. Link swaps has been a big one for me - lots of backlinks. Myspace is a good way. Forward an email through friends/family. Make sure your site has interesting content for word of mouth promotion. Comment on blogs. Think about paying for good positioning in popular directories.
