Because it's sharing resources with the OS. Windows itself would be more efficient if it kept less resources in memory. Why, for example, do you need a large HTML rendering engine to browse your hard drive, use the Start button, and see icons on your desktop? You don't, but it's there, and that's why IE appears to use less resources. But in fact it's not, it's just sharing what FF doesn't.
I recommend people
drop Microsoft sofware completely. The alternatives are far superior.
