If you blanket submit an article - either manually or through an automated submittal process, you will initially see lots of backlinks, and then slowly as the search engines note the duplicate articles, you will see those backlinks go down dramatically. As AverageGuy pointed out, the main way to avoid this is to submit a unique version of the article to each directory. In my sig is an article submitter program that does this which I use and highly recommend.
