Offering valuable advice & free tools is always a good way to attract potential customers. If you haven't already, study what Rand has done at seomoz. He's one of the best when it comes to promotion, and has managed to get great publicity from publications like Newsweek.

If you can pull off a viral/linkbait type of event like John did, that'd be good too. But doing something like that is a tough nut to crack.
