I guess the most important factor in getting listed soon or wait for years is in accordance with the keywords of your choice. I have seen some websites getting listed in a couple of weeks because their website was not targetted for hot keyterms. I gradually begin to consider a connection between the sandbox period length and DMOZ waiting period, i.e, the selection of keywords does matter.
The hotter keyterms selected, the more you should wait to get listed.
