How does AdSense work?

Hi guys,
Just a relatively simple question:

I'm pretty new to all this AdSense stuff, and was wondering how Google AdSense manages to place "Relevant" ads on a page?

For example, If my site is about "Microsoft Office" software, I would expect my keywords and meta tags to relate to this subject - but is it "only" these keywords/meta tags which makes AdSense display relevant ads?

My problem:
I have a page which is an "answer" (landing) page, and would like to monetise the page with AdSense - what I'd "LIKE" to do is quite simply find a "BUZZ" topic, and change whatever I need to do on the page to enable AdSense to display ads relating to this "Buzz" topic - whilst leaving the "Answer" on the page!

Is this possible - if so - how?

Thanks in advance!
Steve
