The article from cricket is excellent but if you just want my words of wisdom in shorthand form.....:

Simply click File, Save for web...and it should bring up a window with your image in it and options on the right hand side.....
Click PNG 24 from the drop down menu
when selected make sure the transparency check box is checked
then simply choose save...
