I believe it is a little of both things you mentioned.

Guy proposes a useful test for anything you're about to post or mail: Ask yourself, "Would I say this to the person's face?" If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. I like to take somewhat of a cautiously optimistic approach. As with most things, I tend to hope for the best but expect the worst. It keeps me believing in people but not being too disappointed if they let me down.
