Google says you need to make it clear that the images and the ads don't go together and they need to be separated somehow. They don't say though, what constitutes separation. I believe a certain amount od space would count. It would be fine if the background color of the ad was different than the background color of the images. Just something to make it clear that the two don't go together.
It was vague though as to what was and wasn't allowed and like Julie I've seen images and ads placed together with and without lines between them. I think the less clear you make it that the ads and images are separate the more clicks you're likely to get. But the more you make it clear they're different the more you are honestly staying within the guideline from Google. I think most sites that use the technique look for a fine balance in between.

Yeas this image method is sweeping adsense users everywhere. Even google is beta testing it on some ads.
