Detecting fake PR

What is a good way to detect if a PR is faked without using an online Fake PR checker? I have read in several places to look at the cached pages PR, but that always seems to be PR0, some say to look at the page itself, if it isn't a replica of the current page, then it could possibly be a redirect. I have used PR checkers that check multiple data centers, but I have not seen if that is accurate or not. I would assume it is.
