How much did mine cost? Well Im not sure since I bult them both myself.
I would not classify either as being a power server but these are the specs. remember I built them over a year and half ago so they are not the fastest hardward but serve my purposes.
Server1
Duron 750Mhz
384MB SDRAM
1 80GB HD (had two in a mirror raid config but one died)
Redhat 7.3
Apache
Mysql
Postfix
Samba
FTP
SSH
Server2
T'bird 1.0Ghz overclocked to 1.1Ghz
512MB SDRAM
2 40GB HD's
Redhat 9
Apache
Mysql
Sendmail
Samba
FTP
SSH
I am going to migrate most of the items I am using server1 for over to be on server2 at some point. The services I have listed on the servers are the major ones running as there are several less major items that each is doing. For example server2 is now automated to do a full backup of my main website thats hosted at QWH on an every other day schedule. Server1 also compiles my stats for my sites that run on QWH since awstats was suspended on server1.QWH
I have a 768KB up/down connection to my DSL provider. I have a constant IP with them so I dont have to worry about my IP constatly changing. I use zoneedit.com for my DNS services
I mostly use the servers for working on my websites in a 'controled' enviorment where if I mess something up I dont have to worry about it affecting the live site. I also run my personal website off of that server aswell as my personal e-mail address.
You really dont need a T1 to your house unless your hosting a website with alot of traffic. For example I use dto run
www.aquariumadvice.com from my home up until Nov 02. At that point we had on average 5-10 people online at any given time and it really slowed the website down because of my limited internet speed. For a site that has maybe 1-5 people on at any given time a conenction slower than a T1 is fine unless your doing some kind of multimedia streaming.
