Though number of backlinks is a factor in google algorithm, it's not the only one. It's not an equation: more backlinks = top ranking. Keywords, meta tags, page content, links etc, all have a role. An example is that statcounter has more backlinks than all other traffic stats companies, but search such keywords in google, you can't find statcounter in the top 1.
