It really doesn't matter in fact - it's only the pixel size which counts for the images that will be used for the web.
A 100x100 GIF image will look the same, no matter what its resolution is.

This value (72/90/96dpi) only defines how big will the physical size (in/cm) of such an image be on a particular monitor.
