If you type anything like "website promotion" or "car rentals" or "cheap hotels" on Google or Yahoo... you can take first 50 sites and you will see that at least 30 of them linked from Yahoo directory, so, it mean that Yahoo host hundereds thousands websites and charge trem recruting fee every year ( $299 ).

Take any good paid directory and you will see how many links submitted, 1 000 - 2 000 - 10 000, check how long their online...
Even do easier, check "New Sites" page on pr6-7 paid directories. Some of them have 10-20 new sites a day and they charge $20 - $100+
