John, essentially I had a number of new sites and I built them up to a steady regular traafic (e.g 100 uniques per day from Google).
Then I used techniques such as getting hundreds of links in the space of one week from directories, adding lots of keywords to the meta description, building links solely to the homepage, doing link trades with non relevant sites etc.....
I did one of the above with each site, and on one of the sites I did NOTHING. After one month the site that had been neglected had the most traffic.
This is far from conclusive proof, but it may suggest that factors that may not be enough to get banned/penalised, may cause you to lose trustrank. So be careful and be natural in your SEO efforts.
