Well there are a lot of factors upon which a website rank well on the search engines. You can't leave any of them. You got to look on each and every aspect of it.
Domain age is important only if they have been there for quite some time and has got good quality IBLs. Otherwise it's not that useful compared to a fairly new domain. The market I was fighting had a site #1 which is 7 years old and I am #2 after their domain and my domain is what 11 months old! Well that's the power of SEO and winning the Trust of google.
Well for John. New domains are cool. He could take any market within a year or two. And i'm on his boots too. And slowly you become an authority then comes John's "not what but where" thingie..
