Domain age is very highly important, for example I got a client his website is ranked for very very competitive keywords, but guess what he only has 4,000 backlinks, and he is the largest reseller for hallmark ornaments, but why doe she rank so high, hes a lugit buisness that has trust with google, and has been on the web for awhile, a trust domain, or older domain is always going to rank higher.
For example, have you ever notice a website ranking very well, but the content was really nothing like you expect, but ranked for a competitive keyword, I mean browse around the web, and you'll find out that older domains sometimes have hardly no backlinks, but are ranking very well.
