No need to apologise, although I have to as I'm so late in replying, been in hosptital.
I actually think reciprocal linking is now one of the worst things you can do, more-so as so many directories do it. All it does is create duplicate content if you ask me and thats killing the credability of directories. I'm with you, content is King.
Your also right that its the choice of the owner of the directory of whether they want reciprocal linking, thats why I buillt a 'switch on or off' option in my directory script
