It can be very valuable, or it can be useless, depending on how you do it. With social networking sites, you will get teh most traffic if you build up a network of friends behind you. It gives your votes more power, and they will send more traffic your way. Also, your topic will have more effect on certain sites and not on others, since they all tend to favor certain topics. One that I have been especially impressed with lately is StumbleUpon. If you build up a solid network of friends and are the first to suggest sites that many others thumb up, you can get some awesome, targeted traffic.

Don't forget that the additional traffic can be a source of inbound links...whenever you expose your site to more people, you have a chance they will link to you if you have some great content. I've gotten a lot of new links as a direct result of the extra traffic.
