I suffer from depression, and have been since I was a kid. So, there are many days when I just want to stay in bed and sleep, with no desire to do anything. I don't take any prescribed medicine for it, I smoke a bowl or two and it actually brings out a desire to do something. It helps me to focus my attention on what I am doing without being overwhelmed with the thoughts that cause me to be depressed in the first place. I for one support its medicinal qualities, as I have been self medicating myself with it for a long time, and I don't have to take anti-depressants, which usually have side effects. I don't get any side-effects from pot, except the occasional urge to eat, which is good because when I am 'down', I have no desire to eat either.
