I think giving and receiving a compliment with good grace seems to have disappeared from social interaction these days.
Take my wife for instance.

I kind of stop complimenting her these days cos she just thinks I am up to something. Admittedly I usually am;
1) drooling while staring at her chest, 2) scanning her up and down with bulging wolf eyes, 3) whispering softly in her ears so that my compliments sensuously tickled her cochlea, 4) am naked in a "come and get me babe" pose.
There is nothing wrong with an innocent compliment if it comes from the heart, and has no strings attached. The problem is we have become a skeptical bunch of people who are constantly bombarded with sweet nothings from people that just want to get into our wallets in one way or another. Or want something else from us. Everybody is doing it and the only way to protect yourself is to take it all with a very large pinch of salt and question everything you hear and search for double meanings when, perhaps none exist.
For instance how many of you thought I was up to something with this post?
