try;

yahoo site explorer: http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/

google webmaster tools: http://www.google.com/webmasters/sitemaps/

set up google analytics on the site as well (more so you can at least see whats happening: http://www.google.com/analytics/

Yahoo directory (paid listing $200) is historically a good place to put your URL.

But linking from other popular sites is the best way t start it all off.
Try and get sites that are related to yours, ie if you sell furniture dont link from a ****** site etc not good.
