Please be sure to install these programs onto a _different_ harddrive first. (If at all possible)
Your greatest worry is overwriting good data during your attempts to recover it.

I would highly recommend removing the drive to another computer and hooking it up as a slave as G10 originally suggested. (Excellent tip btw)

It is sad but, the number of people that don't have backups is horribly low; Myself ( a long time tech) being one of the worst offenders!
