It all really depends on what criteria you want to measure best with.

If you're going for most versatile, I'd have to say the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They can play you a song in whatever style you want to hear, and do it all extremely well.

If you're going for best at the style that they do, I might say Metallica. They brought metal to everyone's attention, and almost every cliche metal thing that you hear today is because Metallica brought it to someone's attention. Yes, they had their influences, but those guys didn't get into the mainstream mind now, did they?

If you're going for overall fan appeal across the ages, I might say The Beatles. I don't think they'll ever go out of style, and for good reason. They're just good.
