One of my PC's is a little older as well. A PIII in fact that came with Windows 98 on it. About two years ago I put XP Pro and some more MB's of RAM on the unit and it gave it new life for sure. It has been doing pretty well still after two years..
Another system we have, bought for my daughter two years ago, came with XP home on it and just last week I had to do a full reformat and system recovery on that system. Those p2p programs, kids all love, are really hard on equipment. It was totally froze up and would only show the splash screen. No desktop controls what so ever.
So, the point being I guess is that it can vary from unit to unit, depending on a number of circumstances and the way it is used or maintained.
Sometimes if the machine is running really slow the best thing to do is save all important data to a removable storage medium and do a full system recovery, including reformat. It will do wonders for a machine. However this would require you to have the original, or newer purchased OS software.
