Yep, as in WW1, the Netherlands was NEUTRAL and Hitler invaded it by surprise in the nigh time without even declarinig war up front. Needless to say that the Netherlands was not at all prepared for war, as they had been neutral in the first ww and did not even have a real sufficient army at the time.

Because our borders where not protected, and because of the dense population in the little country it would have been a historical mistake to not surrender. taking an allready lost war into the cities would have resulted in massive casualties for the Dutch population with an outcome that was allready clear to begin with.

Did you know that Rotterdam, the second biggest city in the Netherlands, was bombed (and everyone in that city) untill the whole city was flattened by the nazis because one of the tiny islands didn't want to surrender? Did you know that the nazis treathened to do the same with Amsterdam if that island (Walcheren) didn't surrender and that this was the reason why those people gave in and surrendered to save Amsterdam?
