Before the world, and probably the Pope too, knew what Hitler was doing to the Jews he was on very friendly terms with the Pope and the Vatican, one could also think that the Pope started to act like a people savior once it became known what H was doing, to clean up his image as a supporter of that dude.
..and don't forget that our present Pope was in service of the nazi army as an army chaplain to support the troops spiritually during the complete wartime. The beloved Pope Ratsinger was one of the guys who blessed the soldiers that went out to round up jews all over Europe and beyond.
