laptop, new vs used?

I'm looking to complete my ideal work setup, which means I'm looking to buy a laptop. I originally wanted a macbook, but I've since decided that I want to have a linux machine.

This machine is literally going to be for browsing the internet, and editting text files. That is ALL. Which means I don't need to go to best buy and get the latest and greatest in laptop technology. That said, I don't want a shitty used one either.

Half of me wants to just get a new one, cause I like new stuff. But if I'm gonna waste 200 or 300 dollars extra just to get something brand new... well I'd rather not do that.

On the other hand, I don't know what's a reasonable price for a used one. And If i'm gonna get a used one for 400 or 500 bucks which may have underlying issues, I might as well just pay the 600 for something I'm sure that works.

My question is, if you guys were looking to buy a laptop primarily for work stuff (no games, no graphics software, etc...) what would you do?
