You are right in the fact that you only have so many seconds to capture the interest of the person visiting your site. Also I agree that to much is put into page views as a measure. I am more interested in seeing the number of uniques and also the amount of time spent on a given page. I think that the goal of writing should be to maintain the interest of the person reading it and getting them to recommend your site and to come back themselves.
