I'd rather pay for a service (ie. Flickr pro account, YPP game subscription) than support a site that makes profit solely off ads. Look at wikipedia - they ask for donations and get them because it's a worthwhile site. If only donation sites took the place of all advertised-laden sites, I have a feeling that the survival of the fittest, and best sites would exercise itself.

Sites that are living from subscriptions will have some difficulties to survive (see the example of the online dating industry affected by the success of the plentyoffish website). If we will remove the ads from the rest of the websites we will end up with a great Internet experience ... but without any website
