In a sense I agree with you chicgeek, however I have Gimp, While it does seem to perform a Majority of the tasks needed in the day to day field it was developed for. I find that I only use it now days as an additional Filter Tweaking tool Rather than a full Digital graphics software.
It is very Robust with options, I give it that, it's not very user friendly though. If I was new to digital Graphics, Gimp would go way over my head.
Maybe its just me.... I found that a paid Full featured software such as DP8 was more user friendly & equally robust with features. It kinda put Gimp on the "Use ONLY when you Need the additional Filters" list.
Not to mention the 24/7 support, warranty, Etc... you get with a paid software / service....
I'm sure there are more user friendly free versions out there & maybe someone offering Free 24/7 technical support & warranty's.. I just haven't seen it yet.
I am just old fashioned I suppose, with the thought of "You get what you pay for".
Anyways, I hope the keyword tools help...
