IF you plan on using php and databases on the web, your best bet is to learn mysql. that is what most of the websites are run on and what php works best with, IMO.

Access is fine but is made for MS systems and has limitations. For instance , if you are using Access as a database for one on these phpBB forums (like this one), you are limited to 4k on your posts. If you post is bigger than 4 k, Access will not allow it.
