The reason is simply the more pages you add your keyword(s) too the more competition you are making for yourself, which in itself is slightly amusing.
It is very easy to use an anchor text that do not contain your main keywords.

Ok, well you posted it & now I am forced to rebuttal seeing that you have everyone on this thread so far thinking that anchoring text with primary keywords is bad if they have more than one page focusing on similar keywords in accordance to content Vs. Keyword Density & meta arrangements.
First off, I would like to say that i have over 3,000+ pages on my site & I add 1-5 more pages every week (If not more). My Primary Dept. is Marketing Consulting with a secondary Dept. in Web Design (In complements of the Primary). With over 3,000+ pages I am sure you can assume that the majority of them are all related to the same types of keywords in order to keep the entire site ON TOPIC, in its entirety.
As far as 1 page competing with 1,000 other pages on my site, thats fine with me, at least one will be in the serps for the main phrase while the others will list for long tail phrases (Just as important).
The thing to keep in mind here is that you can control how the pages will rank in the Serp's amongst each other with the Inbound Anchor text.
Example: lets say I have 5 pages with the same keyword focuses, such as Part's 1-5 in a tutorial study. Even though they focus on the same keywords, I can place anchored text (Linked) Only to Part 1 - Thus mathematically calculating in the algorithm as the best possible Serp's page due to prominent link juice (Inbound anchored text links).
People who found page 2 or 4 as a good reference to a small portion may anchor a text link to that page using a none keyword text phrase - Thus allowing that page the opportunity to rank in the Serp's for a separate term all together.
While keywords DO play a major roll in SEO, you must keep in mind that anchor text can & WILL manipulate a Serp's listing if enough Links are found by a Search Engine Algorithm to Mathematically Calculate that Page as being important for that particular term to "X" amount of people (more than your competitors particularly).
To support this claim, Please type "Click Here" in the Google search engine. The #1 listing should be an Adobe page. Now click that Adobe page.. Guess what? the term "Click Here" is not even used once on that page. Just goes to show that enough inbound anchors can & WILL make a difference!
In a sense, each page (Even with the same keyword focus) is a Unique portal / Doorway for others to link to in order to validate or provide supporting reference to one of their own viewers in a related topic or article. (Hinse content being King = organic Inbound Links "With or without Anchors")
Keep in mind that you can also place a link somewhere on each page to point back to the main page you want to be dominant, Thus passing some of the Link Juice (Authority) back to it.
I think it would be safer to tell people on this thread simply to make sure you link to the proper page with the proper anchored term. It's that simple.
