There are two things I do when I visit almost any website on my Firefox (with the Webdeveloper Extension):
1-Press CTRL + SHIFT + S, which means deactivating CSS in order to check the document's semantics.
2-Press CTRL + U, in firefox to view how clean the <head> block is.
Sometimes also press CTRL + SHIFT + A to validate it's XHTML markup. But many websites fail to comply with this rule

Funny thought because if you press ctrl shift a on this page you get 104 errors.
YET it's a successful site with great content and ranking.
I am dubious of the value of xhtml in web pages. On web pro world I've read stories of people xhtml'izing their sites and losing ranking. I think it happened to my site but I can't be sure because there were too many variables during the time period.
