Im thinkin' I don't want to design anymore....
I have been in love with design since I realized the power that came before it and after it. However, I worked at a small design firm for ONE month and that experience has yet changed my mind on this. I hope someone can break me out of this shell.
I moved to Dallas hoping to get into a small Ad Firm/Design Firm down here. Well, I did. When I was being interviewed it sounded pahh-fect. (That's my British accent for perfect.) The lady who owned the company was sweet as cherry pie and sounded like she ran a good business. So I gave it a shot!
The first day my gut was telling me, "Do you really want to be stuck in this fluorescent land for the next 10 years? Cuz I'm your belly and I sure as hell don't." But I thought it was the 'first day blues' and sucked it up. The rest of the week went on and I realized that there are only 3 middle aged women in this company. No men. In fact, they talked down on men designers and young inspiring designers. (Note: I'm a 26 year old female and tried not to take this personally as they directed the comments to me.) Couple more weeks went by and they started making non-professional crude comments to me about perfume or my 'red purse' and complained about everything from young Account Exec's to too much mayo on their ham sandwich from Potbelly's. (*That is NO lie either.)
I just couldn't take it anymore. On top of 3 unhappy, middle aged women that hated men and youth, and constant verbal abuse, there was NO design, and if there were, they wouldn't listen at all to any creative ideas I had to offer. All old-school typesetting and proofreading.
I'm going to cut this short by saying I am one tough cookie. I can take constructive and destructive criticism, it comes with the occupation and shouldn't be taken as a hazard. I can take just about anything and put up with anyone crazy. But, yes folks, it got the best of me. I quit after a month.
I think I need some positive stories on this Industry...can someone turn my HORRIBLE experience into a positive one and tell me how much they love their job? Give me more hope!
