You know, the woman commits some unspeakable infraction, like going out of the house without her man's permission, and he strikes back by beating her with a stick. Then the woman attempts, unfairly of course, to discipline the man by crying. Well, can the man really take that sort of attack lying down when it's "fiercer than the strike of a sword?" No way! So, he has to beat her again and then she cries again, rinse and repeat, until someone finally surrenders. But, given how stubborn some of these radical Islamists can be (See the Palestinians who would rather blow up their children than live in peace with the Jews), you have to figure the wailing and swinging sticks never stops in some of these Saudi households.
